Mirjam Kalin was born in Ljubljana. After completing pedagogical high school, she dedicated herself to the study of solo singing with the preeminent Slovenian diva, Zlata Ognjanović. In May of 1989, Kalin became a member of the semi-professional choir of RTV Slovenia. In March of 1991, she became a member of the newly established Slovenian Chamber Choir. In 1994, she joined the chorus of SNG Opera and Ballet Company in Ljubljana and soon was given her first solo role - as the governess in Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades. In 1996, she became a permanent soloist for SNG Opera and Ballet in Ljubljana and in the intervening years has performed a wide array of more than thirtyfive operatic roles. She also performs with the SNG Opera and Ballet Company in Maribor.

In 1996, as a promising young singer, Kalin won the Wagner stipend. In 1998, she won the Zlata ptic Award (Golden Bird) for her performance in the role of Jela in the Marjan Kozina's opera entitled Equinox. In 2005, she won the prestigious Prešeren Fund Award.

Mirjam Kalin is also very active as a concert singer. She is a unique and important soloist on the stages of Slovenian concert halls. Her artistic path as a soloist in vocal-instrumental works has taken her from the Baroque to the contemporary era, and her solo interpretations of these works have been heard throughout Europe. She has performed in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Scotland, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia.

She has worked as a soloist with many recognized foreign conductors:
