Katja Šulc began to study singing under the mentorship of opera soloist Diego Barrios Ross and soon continued her education with jazz vocalist Irena Vidic. After attending several jazz workshops she was accepted to the New School ’s Jazz&Contemporary Music Programe in 2005 and was granted a merit based scholarship. In New York she had the opportunity to train and work with some of the great jazz musicians, such as Sheila Jordan, Theo Bleckmann, Andy Bey, Junior Mance, Charles Tolliver, Chico Hamilton to name a few. She is currently studying with professor Lela Radovan.

As a vocalist Katja Šulc works with Slovenian and foreign musicians, moving between different genres, from poetry set to music, jazz, chanson to ethnic, r'n'b, popular urban music and “spoken word”, with an interest in experimenting with the vocal and spoken word in theatre productions.

Literature and poetry play a major role in Katja’s life. She participated in many different projects that set to music the poetry of Dane Zajc (Odpeti, Kuhna, 2002), Ježek, Kosovel, Rumi, Hafis and other poets. In 2008 she released her debut album Mila, featuring the poetry by Mila Kačič (Sanje, 2008), an album highly respected by critics and popular by the audience. In 2010 this project evolved into a theatre performance Večer z Milo (Senzorium theatre/The National Theatre SNG Drama). As a vocalist Katja also participated on the movie soundtrack for Norega se metek ogne ( Filmogradnja, 2005) and Sladica compilations (RDYO DJ’s - T3S, 2008 and 2010).

Katja Šulc is an artist supported by the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia, specializing in performance art. She also acts as an event presenter and host of the Knjiga mene briga ( Book concerns me ), a highly respected talk show at the National television RTV SLO that won several awards in its decade of broadcasting.
